Exclusive: Emmerdale star James Chase rules out a fan theory over Tom

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale newcomer James Chase has played down speculation over his character Tom King having a hidden agenda.

Fans have been wondering whether Tom's behaviour could take a darker turn following his return to the village and his romantic reunion with Belle Dingle.

Tom arrived back in the Dales in April following a 10-year absence and wasted little time before reconciling with Belle. Their relationship has progressed quickly since then, which some viewers have seen as a red flag.

When Digital Spy chatted exclusively with James at the British Soap Awards 2023, we asked whether Tom could still have a dark side.

However, he replied: "No – I think it's easy to say that, because of the stuff that happened over a decade ago when he was younger. It's easy to make that assumption.

"But to me, I see Tom as [someone who has] turned over a new leaf now. I think he's put that behind him."

Discussing the storyline's future, he revealed: "What I can say is that [we're] going to continue that interesting story between him and Belle.

"It's going to showcase the love between them and it will stay interesting for the audience."

Tom recently decided to make a permanent move to the village after securing a job at the local vet surgery.

Next week's episodes see him move in with Rishi Sharma, who's feeling lonely following the departure of his daughter Priya.

James added: "I've had a couple of scenes with Bhasker [Patel, who plays Rishi] and he's great. He's so much fun.

"He brings such a fun energy and a physicality to the scenes. There's definitely some scenes there that fans can look forward to, for sure."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
