Anthony Patterson WILL be called up by England for the next set of internationals – but TEAMtalk can exclusively reveal the Sunderland goalkeeper will get the nod for the England Under-21s, rather than the senior squad.

The Black Cats academy graduate has been in superb form this season and has proved an absolute rock in Tony Mowbray’s defence. Regarded by many as the best goalkeeper in the Championship, Patterson is a big factor in Sunderland’s push for the play-offs.

His form between the sticks has, understandably, alerted a string of admirers. Indeed, both Wolves and Leicester are reportedly keeping tabs on the 22-year-old ahead of the summer window.

And it seems he is set to showcase his talents at a higher level sooner than expected with several sources indicating Patterson is in line for a senior England call-up.

Indeed, while Three Lions coach Gareth Southgate has been making checks on Patterson’s progress, TEAMtalk can reveal the star will actually get the nod to hook up with England Under-21s instead.

North Shields born Patterson has not played for England at any point of his career thus far. And that his elevation into the England Under-21s will be fitting reward for his excellent performances this season.

And the good news keeps on coming for Patterson, with Southgate ready to closely monitor Patterson with the Under-21s training side by side alongside the senior set-up at St George’s Park.

Indeed, we understand that Patterson is seen as someone who is capable of being a future senior England goalkeeper.

As it stands though, Southgate remains extremely happy with his first three of Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale. To that end, all three are all enjoying very good seasons in the Premier League.

However, Patterson can certainly use his call-up to further impress Southgate, particularly if he debuts for the Young Lions.

Lee Carsley’s Under-21s face France on Saturday March 25 and then Croatia on March 28.

And if does well, Patterson can put himself in the frame for a future call up should any of the trio suffer with injury or a loss of form.
