Ezekiel Elliott not bothered by recent drop in production: 'The passing game is rolling'
After a three-game slump, the Dallas Cowboys have won three of their last four games and are preparing for a road matchup with the New England Patriots on Sunday.
Running back Ezekiel Elliott’s numbers haven’t been great the last couple of games — after the loss to Minnesota in Week 10, noted troll Skip Bayless threw away his Elliott jersey in a poorly acted mini-tantrum — but Elliott isn’t bothered.
‘The passing game is rolling right now’
Elliott has only 92 rushing yards on 36 carries over the last two games; that is an alarming 2.55 yards per attempt.
But Elliott had 100-yard rushing games in the Cowboys’ three outings before the matchup with Minnesota, averaging 4.9 yards per carry on 73 attempts.
The converse to Elliott’s recent low numbers: quarterback Dak Prescott threw for 397 yards against the Vikings and 444 yards against the Detroit Lions last Sunday. He had 46 passing attempts in each game.
Because of that, Elliott told media he’s not frustrated.
“The passing game is rolling right now so you’ve got to ride it and ride it while it’s hot,” he said. “Hopefully, it’s rolling through the rest of the season and you don’t need to run the ball. Not really looking at it that way, the receivers and Dak are rolling right now. When someone has the hot hand, keep giving them the ball.”
Now in his fourth season, Elliott turned things around on reporters, saying, “That’s what a good teammate does. You guys [media] kind of make me feel awkward, like I’m supposed to be pissed because I had 40 yards and we won a football game.”
He’s not wrong: If he’d complained after the win over Detroit or seemed in any way unhappy with the role he’d played, Elliott would have been criticized.
