FA Cup first round draw coming up

The FA Cup first round draw is imminent, with 47 teams from League One and League Two about to meet the 32 non-league sides who have survived the perils, pitfalls, sharpened bamboo stakes and grenade-triggering tripwires of the qualifying rounds.

Broadcast live on BBC Two, the draw will be eagerly awaited throughout the lower leagues even as the behemoths of the Premier League and Championship lumber on oblivious. Former England winger Karen Carney and ex-Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford will oversee proceedings with the draw taking place at the Maldon Stadium, home of Maldon & Tiptree.

There are an odd number of clubs entering the draw this year owing to Bury's expulsion from the Football League, meaning that the final club left in the draw will receive an automatic bye to the second round (along with the £36,000 prize money which comes with progression past this stage of the competition).

Among the non-league sides involved, some come from as low as the eighth tier of the football pyramid. Chichester City and Maldon & Tiptree – representing the Isthmian League South East Division and the Isthmian League North Division respectively – are the lowest-ranked sides left in the tournament, while Nantwich Town, Carshalton Athletic and Kingstonian all play in the seventh tier.

Other seventh-tier sides in the pot include Potters Bar Town, Haringey Borough, Hayes & Yeading, Poole Town, Whitby Town and Stourbridge, though they all face either replays or reorganised games in their bid to reach the first round proper.

They could be handed huge ties against the likes of Portsmouth, Sunderland, Blackpool and Coventry City. For non-league sides with limited resources, the significance of a lucrative match-up against a Football League giant cannot be overstated.
