Another week and another round of dramatic fixtures in the FA Women’s Super League which included goals, a red card and a missed penalty.

Arsenal continued their charge while City also continued to get amongst the goals.

Bristol City denied Yeovil a first point late on, Liverpool edged out West Ham United and defending champions Chelsea continued their frustrating start to the campaign in high octane weekend.

Viv keeps Arsenal perfect

How do you follow up beating the defending champions on their own patch? Score six to maintain your perfect record.

A 6-0 thrashing of Reading saw Vivianne Miedema continue her superb start to the season with a hat-trick at Meadow Park.

Joe Montemurro’s side have played some sensational football in their opening five matches as Beth Mead, Jordan Nobbs and Danielle van de Donk also got in on the act to make it five wins from five.

A tricky test against Bristol City now faces Arsenal but in this kind of mood, they fear absolutely no one.

Stanway on song

There was another hat-trick hero on a Sunday spectacular as Georgia Stanway starred in Manchester City’s 6-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion.

The teenager opened her account with a fine long-range drive before Caroline Weir added to the scoreline.

A long-range dipping effort and a fierce shot from the edge of the box brought up the hat-trick for Stanway as Nikita Parris and Claire Emslie put gloss on the scoreline.

That result puts City second, a point behind the Gunners but having played a game more.

Missed opportunities

Chelsea’s struggles in front of goal have been well documented and it proved another frustrating afternoon for the Blues as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Birmingham.

Karen Carney had the best chance to open the scoring but her second half penalty was saved well by Birmingham stopper Ann-Katrin Berger after Ji So-Yun was fouled by Kerys Harrop.

Birmingham had Hayley Ladd sent off late on but they held firm to secure a point and are now third in the FA WSL.

As for Chelsea, it’s a third successive goalless draw away from home in the league and leaves Emma Hayes’ side eight points off Arsenal already having played a game more.

Graham at the double

Yeovil came desperately close to picking up a first point of the season last week against Liverpool and it was the same feeling at home against Bristol City this weekend.

Lucy Graham opened the scoring for the visitors but Yeovil responded immediately in the West Country derby, courtesy of Amber Gaylor.

But just as Yeovil had started to dream of a first point of the campaign, they were undone with 17 minutes to go.

And it was Scotland’s Graham who was at it again, heading home to snatch the points and move into fifth place.

Building momentum

After an inauspicious start for Liverpool, the Reds have now picked up back-to-back victories as they look to run up some momentum.

It was Courtney Sweetman-Kirk who made the difference against West Ham United, heading home after Becky Spencer had thwarted Niamh Charles.

The result is Liverpool’s third victory in their last four games and with that kind of form, will be looking to make a charge towards the top.

Super eight

Elsewhere, in the FA Women’s Championship, Tottenham showed why they’re one of the most feared sides in the league with an 8-0 mauling of Millwall.

The result puts Tottenham top of the league and it was a birthday to remember for Rianna Dean who scored a hat-trick in the rout.

Angela Addison’s double, Sarah Wiltshire, Ashleigh Neville and Bianca Baptiste all helped themselves to goals as the Lilywhites go on a title charge.
