Fabio Carvalho reckons he can help Liverpool bounce back from their pre-season defeat to Manchester United by scoring against Crystal Palace.

The Reds began preparations for the 2022/23 campaign on a tough note, despite the result mattering little. United were 3-0 up in the first half on Tuesday in Bangkok.

Liverpool, though, fielded three different teams, with two rafts of changes allowing minutes for a host of players.

Carvalho was one such Liverpool player who feaured in the Reds’ 4-0 defeat. In fact, he was making his debut after joining from Fulham earlier this summer.

Speaking to LFCTV after the match in Thailand, he backed himself to right the team’s wrongs by scoring in the next game.

“We have a winning mentality that starts in training and we want to win at any cost,” the 19-year-old said.

“Today is bittersweet for me as it’s not nice to get beat, especially in the way we did against United.

“We’ll make sure we correct our mistakes and put it right in the next game. Next game I’m sure I’ll score, that’s the mentality you’ve got to have!”

Carvalho started for Liverpool before coming off after 30 minutes for James Milner, amid a host of other changes.

Fellow new signing Darwin Nunez also made his Reds debut as manager Jurgen Klopp watched the Uruguayan in match action for the first time.

Liverpool return to action on Friday against Crystal Palace as they step up preparations for the new season.

Carvalho, in particular, could have an exciting role to play under Klopp this season. The versatile attacking midfielder can operate in the engine room, or further forward in attack.

His partnership with fellow former Fulham youngster Harvey Elliott will be a good watch.

Liverpool, Carvalho shrug off pre-season concerns

Klopp admitted after the 4-0 defeat to United that the game came too early after the end-of-season break for some of his players.

In the grand scheme of things, Liverpool have shown before that a poor pre-season is not a pre-cursor for a bad season.

Indeed, they failed to win a single one of their preparatory matches ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

But they went on to romp to the Premier League title with 99 points and reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

Liverpool will hope the minutes in the legs of all those involved on Tuesday will help them progress, though, with match fitness vital ahead of a particularly long season amid the World Cup in Qatar.
