Fabricio Werdum Making Cain Velasquez Wait for UFC Championship Rematch

Though it initially sounded as if the rematch between UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum and former champ Cain Velasquez would happen by the end of the year, or at least early 2016, the fight appears to be getting pushed back to spring.

In early August, UFC president Dana White confirmed that Werdum's first title defense would be a rematch with Velasquez. Talking to the media about his first defense, Werdum said he had hoped for the fight to happen in December as part of UFC 194: Aldo vs. McGregor. If not then, he thought it might happen at the Super Bowl weekend card in early February.

The champ appears to have changed his mind.

“Unfortunately, this heavyweight division is tied up right now,” White said at Saturday night's UFC 191 post-fight press conference. “The fight won’t happen probably until March; the next heavyweight (title) fight.”

White was responding to a question about whether or not Andrei Arlovski, who had just defeated Frank Mir, would be next in line for a title shot. But if the Werdum vs. Velasquez rematch doesn't happen until at least March, it's unlikely that Arlovski would be put on the shelf for such an extended period of time, awaiting a title fight several months later.

Of course, if Velasquez defeats Werdum in their rematch, it's also possible that a rubber match could be on order, which would put an Arlovski bout that much farther out of reach.

Plus, White didn't exactly confirm that Arlovski had done enough to jump to the front of the line to get the next title shot anyway.

“We’ll see how this thing plays out and go from there,” he said.

Werdum and Velasquez were first scheduled to meet at UFC 180 in November of 2014, following a stint as opposing coaches on the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America. That fight fell apart when then-champion Velasquez suffered a knee injury and had to drop out of the fight. Werdum instead faced and defeated Mark Hunt for the interim UFC heavyweight championship.

A unification bout finally occurred at UFC 188 in June of this year, where Werdum defeated Velasquez via a third-round guillotine choke.

But why is the rematch taking so long to materialize? That's what the champ wants, said White.

“That’s when Werdum wants to fight.”
