Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed a clever clause Liverpool inserted in the sale of defender Neco Williams to Nottingham Forest.

Williams officially quit the Reds for the City Ground outfit on Monday, penning a four-year contract after Forest coughed up £17.5million for the Wales international.

It emerged last season that Williams’ hopes of regular game time under Jurgen Klopp were slim. Indeed, the 21-year-old ended up joining Fulham on loan for the second half of the campaign.

Williams helped the Cottagers bounce back to the top flight at the first time of asking.

The London club were in the running to make his move permanent. However, Forest struck to secure the right-back ahead of them.

And now Romano has revealed that the Reds inserted a 15% sell-on clause in the deal.

That allows them to claim a cut of any future sale of the Wales defender down the line.

Williams ended up being surplus to requirements at Anfield after Liverpool signed Calvin Ramsay.

The 18-year-old Scottish prospect arrived from Aberdeen and is expected to be Trent Alexander-Arnold’s understudy.

As for Forest, they were in need of a right-sided defender after Djed Spence returned to parent club Middlesbrough.

The Boro star is now expected to complete a move to Tottenham, hence Forest’s chase for Williams instead.

The former Reds star is expected to be in Rob Page’s Wales squad for the Qatar World Cup later this year.

Liverpool wise to have hand in Williams’ future

Jurgen Klopp would have been loathed to allow Neco Williams to quit Liverpool this summer.

The defender never let the Reds down, either domestically or in the Champions League. But the deal made really good business sense.

The Merseysiders pocket more than £17m for an international player. But they will also cash in if he excels and is eventually moved on for big money.

The addition of Ramsay also made it a no-brainer. The Scottish youngster not only has the talent to be understudy to Alexander-Arnold but also to eventually challenge the England man.
