Fabrizio Romano has revealed Chelsea “want to start a bidding war” for Mason Mount so that they can receive £80million from the transfer.

Mount leaving Chelsea seems a formality now. Earlier on in the season, it seemed a surprise that the Blues weren’t doing their all to secure the star.

Indeed, he’s been one of their most important assets since he made the breakthrough into the first team.

Mount has been directly involved in 70 goals in 195 games for the side. That he’s only 24 suggests he’ll continue to be a crucial member of the Chelsea side for years to come.

Or he would do, if they wanted to keep him. However, it was reported in February – after it came to light Mount wanted to be paid in line with new signings – that negotiations had been paused.

It makes little sense why the Blues wouldn’t want to pay Mount what they pay new signings.

Indeed, he’s contributed a lot to the club during his time there. Some new signings – Mykhaylo Mudryk, for example, has contributed to very little at all.

Reports in April suggested Chelsea were holding out hope they could ‘convince’ Mount into staying. However, there’s been little movement on that front since and it seems fair to question how hard they are actually trying.

Chelsea want to spark Mount bidding war

Transfer insider Romano suggests Chelsea aren’t actually bothered about keeping the star at all. Indeed, they’re seemingly just trying to make as much money from him as they can.

“This is what they want, they want to start a bidding war for Mason Mount,” Romano said on YouTube.

“They want more than £80 million for Mason Mount. But he’s out of contract next summer and this is not an easy situation to handle because the expectation around the player is for the price tag to be different, to be less than £80m.”

Indeed, sparking a bidding war seems the best way for Chelsea to ensure they receive a big fee for Mount.

It’s no surprise why they want to secure that sort of fee. They can’t be in a great position in terms of Financial FairPlay regulations, and given they need to sell fast, they’ll hope the bidding war gets going soon.

That might not be far away from happening. Mount has suitors queuing up for him, in the form of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Romano has confirmed all of those clubs are in the mix to sign the Englishman.

“But Chelsea are still there and they want important money to let Mason Mount go. For sure Manchester United are there, for sure Liverpool and Arsenal are also interested. What Chelsea hope is a bidding war,” Romano said.

It remains to be seen whether any of those sides will succumb to paying £80million. However, if a bidding war does happen, his price could certainly rise to those heights.
