Fabrizio Romano has detailed how Idrissa Gueye feels about leaving Paris Saint-Germain for Everton, three years after going in the opposite direction.

Gueye spent time at Ligue 1 club Lille before joining Aston Villa for £8.1million in July 2015. He made 38 appearances for the club but was sold to Everton a year later. The Villans took a loss of around £500k on the central midfielder.

He spent three seasons at Goodison Park, playing 107 matches in all competitions and scoring four goals. Gueye impressed and resultantly went to PSG for a £27m fee in summer 2019.

The Senegal international featured regularly under Mauricio Pochettino during the 2021/22 campaign. However, the French side now want rid of him following Pochettino’s sacking.

New boss Christophe Galtier has no need for Gueye in his midfield. This is because his options in the centre of the pitch include Marco Verratti, Vitinha, Ander Herrera, Leandro Paredes and Danilo.

Everton have been linked with a move for Gueye’s PSG team-mate Gini Wijnaldum. It would have been a surprising transfer given Wijnaldum’s history at Liverpool.

But Roma are the most likely suitors for the Dutchman, forcing Everton to lock onto Gueye instead.

On Thursday, Everton made an approach to re-sign him, as per Romano. And the Italian journalist states PSG hope to sell Gueye ‘as soon as possible’.

PSG urge Everton to pay Idrissa Gueye salary

Romano has given an update on the situation. Talks are ongoing between Everton and PSG as the two clubs aim to find a solution.

PSG apparently want pretty much all of his wages paid by Everton, suggesting the move will be a season-long loan.

The reporter adds that all parties are keen on the move, and this includes Gueye. Due to this, it shouldn’t be too hard for Everton to get him to sign.

Leaving PSG for Frank Lampard’s team is clearly a step down for the 94-cap international. However, he needs to prioritise game time right now and Everton can offer plenty of this.

Gueye is entering into the twilight years of his career. Playing regularly should help to prolong his time as a player, so a move back to Merseyside makes sense.

It would also be a clever addition for Everton. Lampard needs midfield reinforcements, hence the links with Gueye, Wijnaldum and Ross Barkley.

Gueye could go straight into the starting eleven, alongside Abdoulaye Doucoure and potentially Dele Alli.

Everton cannot afford to spend big sums of money on too many players this summer. They have spent lavishly in the past, only for several of these signings to disappoint.

As a result, a loan move for Gueye would be a shrewd one. It would give the player a chance to impress for a season before potentially joining permanently next year.

Meanwhile, reports claim Everton have come to an agreement with a wide attacker over personal terms, although a deal with his club still needs sorting.
