Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Liverpool should try and sign a midfielder this summer – but accepts the Reds may have plans for 2023.

The Reds have made three new signings in the current transfer window, with Darwin Nunez the standout arrival. The striker has not only replaced Sadio Mane, but points to the long-term future of the club’s front line.

New right-back and midfielder signings Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho, respectively, are also exciting prospects for the future.

But that looks to be the end of Liverpool‘s summer business – for incomings at least. They have, in recent weeks, focused on departures. Neco Williams and Takumi Minamino are among those who have left.

According to transfer expert Romano, though, manager Jurgen Klopp could do with another, more experienced, midfield signing. And Romano pointed towards Sporting’s Matheus Nunes as an ideal candidate.

“It’s gone quiet at Liverpool, as many expected, but if it were up to me I think I’d still be in the market for at least one more signing,” the reporter told Caught Offside.

“Personally, I’d sign a new central midfielder. Jurgen Klopp wanted Aurelien Tchouameni when he was at Monaco and held some talks over the deal, but the player preferred Real Madrid.

“I think another midfielder could help Liverpool. A player like Matheus Nunes, a talented 23-year-old from Sporting Lisbon, would be a smart idea.

“But Liverpool always think long-term and I’m sure they will invest in a midfielder in 2023.”

Liverpool midfield debate rumbles on

Liverpool have eight midfielders in their ranks when all are fit and firing, but that has proved something of a luxury.

Indeed, Thiago Alcantara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have all had their well-documented fitness problems. In fact, Oxlade-Chamberlain has suffered an injury in pre-season already.

Milner, meanwhile, turns 37 in January and while he still looks at the peak of his powers, he has suffered fitness problems in recent seasons.

Klopp’s mantra at Liverpool has always been to find “solutions” if things go wrong. However, there are times when no solution will help them win a game without extra reinforcements who are injured.

It is a debate which will run among the Liverpool fanbase until the transfer window closes – and after to see the ramifications of a final transfer decision.

While Nunes would be a good option this summer, the Reds have eyes on Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham for next year.
