Chelsea were interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach in January and a move could still take place in the summer, according to reports.

It has been suggested that talks were ‘not advanced,’ as the Blues’ priority was to hijack Arsenal’s pursuit of Mykhaylo Mudryk.

Other clubs in the Premier League interested in making a summer bid for Thuram, as well as teams from Serie A and LaLiga, so it looks like there could be a battle for his services.

This is according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who has provided the details on the possibility of Thuram heading to England next season.

Writing for CaughtOffsidehe said: “A deal for Marcus Thuram didn’t happen because Chelsea had the player on their list but it was never close.

“The priority was Mykhaylo Mudryk and they’ve been able to sign him.

“Thuram always wanted to decide his future in the final months of his contract, not in January.”

“Thuram has many proposals from England, Spain and Italy too; the decision will be made later this year.”

Pressure is mounting on Graham Potter after Chelsea lost 1-0 to bottom-of-the-table Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

This has left the Blues in a disappointing tenth place in the Premier League table, with the lack of a proven goal scorer proving to be a real issue.

With that in mind, Thuram could have a major impact on Chelsea next season, as they look to challenge at the top of the table once again.

But to do that, quite simply, they need to score more goals.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was brought in at the beginning of the current campaign, but he has fallen out of favour with Potter and was recently left out of the Blues’ 25-man Champions League squad.

Chelsea also signed David Datro Fofana in January, who has made two Premier League appearances s0 far, but as a 20-year-old, he is more of a prospect than an instant fix.

Thuram, on the other hand, has been in excellent scoring form in the Bundesliga, scoring 11 goals in 20 league appearances for Monchengladbach so far, as well as making two assists.

The 25-year-old also impressed playing for France in the World Cup last year, when he made two assists in five appearances, including one in the final against Argentina.

Thuram’s contract with Monchengladbach will expire at the end of the season with the player refusing to sign an extension, so he will be available on a free transfer.

Manchester United have also been previously linked with the France international, so they, along with Chelsea, have a chance of landing a major bargain next summer.

But, Chelsea are definitely more desperate for a new centre-forward, so they should definitely do everything they can to seal a deal for Thuram at the end of the season.
