After a storming win against Swindon on Tuesday night it was typical that our game on Saturday fell foul of the weather.

It was annoying how they waited so long to call it off with many U’s fans having already set off or even made it as far as Nottingham.

People can understand that games will sometimes end up being called off, but for a game to be postponed due to the scoreboard falling apart is a new one for most.

There was, rightly, questions asked as to what caused this fault and why it could not simply be fixed in the hours leading up to kickoff.

Annoyingly for all involved this did not happen and now we wait to see when the rearranged game will be.

Hopefully for ease – well, relatively speaking – it will be on the weekend of the FA Cup third round as both sides are out of the competition and this will better than a Tuesday night game.

With no game Saturday that does give me space to talk about the Swindon game.

I was on cloud nine for the first half, that 45 produced the best footballing display that we have witnessed from a Colchester side in an exceptionally long time.

Everything seemed to just go like clockwork and although we did not add to our tally in the second half there was the feeling that we did let our foot off the gas and looked to control the game more than all out attack.

Had Swindon got a goal back I do think we could have gone back up the gears and replied in kind.

With a win at Grimsby followed by the draw at Fleetwood, topped off with the emphatic destruction of Swindon, it has been a positive period for us.

I would have happily taken seven points from nine had it been offered at the start of this run of games. But, and of course there is always a but, this has to be a foundation.

We have worked hard and reaped the rewards of building momentum and a bit of breathing space away from the relegation spots, what we now must do is carry this on and not rest on our laurels.

What we have gained can quickly be lost, while at the same time can also be used to carry on our climb up the league.

I am not going to get carried away and say we should start to look at play-offs, although will happily be proved wrong, but rather we need to ensure that all these improvements are seen week in and week out.

It is no good having a three or four-game positive streak to then go and undo it all returning to square one.

There is the EFL Trophy round of 32 game coming up at home against Wimbledon this Tuesday. This game we will hopefully go all out to win, as it is our best, and lets be honest, only real chance of getting the day out at Wembley we all crave.

This is followed by the visit of Newport to North Essex. If we can win both these games then we go into the crazy festive period in a nice purple patch of form.

The Christmas and New Year fixtures are always an interesting time of year.

We have a number of games on random days of the week and so all normal preparation and time between games goes out the window, it is a test of player fitness and squad depth due to the nature of the calendar.

What it also will highlight is just where we need to look to tinker in the January window.

There will of course be ongoing conversations with all relevant parties and I am sure that Danny and Nicky have their fingers in different pies as to who will be possibly coming and going, but there is always a chance that this time of year will throw a curve ball in to the mix.

Personally I doubt we will do much, maybe one or two players will leave who are out of contract this summer and the only real position we are crying out for reinforcements in is left back, as Ellis Landolo has been an ever present in the side this season and any injury to him would be a spanner in the works.

Yes another striker would be nice, but will there be anyone out there available who is better than some of our fringe players?

That waits to be seen and now is not the time to be panic buying, as we have been there before and just end up with another player who doesn’t necessarily improve the side, but takes a wage and then limits what we can do in the summer.

Time will of course tell and no doubt the club will do something no one sees coming. But as fans all we can do it hope this storm blows away and look forward to the games coming in quick fire succession.

Up the U’s.
