Fabio Carvalho has declared that he feels ready to add “creativity and goals” to Liverpool following his arrival at Anfield this summer.
The Reds have unveiled their new signing after he officially moved to Merseyside from Fulham. The 19-year-old has had a deal in place with Liverpool for some time, after January transfer talks between Liverpool and the Cottagers.
But both clubs allowed the player to continue his starring role in Fulham’s promotion push before announcing the transfer.
Liverpool confirmed they had agreed a deal with Fulham for versatile attacker Carvalho at the end of May. But since Friday, he has officially been a Liverpool player.
Speaking in his first interview with his new club, Carvalho – who will wear the No. 28 shirt – admitted it was an “amazing feeling” to join “one of” the biggest – if not “the biggest” – club in the world.
“Once you hear that Liverpool are interested, there’s only one thought in your mind, which is to join them and try to be in and around the team,” he added. “Hopefully I can achieve big things.
“I spoke with everyone, and the manager, and it just felt so natural. When things become natural it’s just so much easier to make a decision.”
Carvalho played mostly in an attacking midfield role for Fulham last season. However, he can slot into the wing positions given his tendency to get forward.
Noting how Marco Silva’s Fulham and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool like to “score goals and dominate games”, the teenager backed himself to “help the team with my assists, creativity and goals”.
Klopp lauds Carvalho, Liverpool signing
Offering his own reaction, Klopp lauded “confident” and “adventurous” Carvalho’s ability to “bring a stadium to its feet”.
The Liverpool manager added on highlights of the Portugal Under-21 international’s game: “He is a versatile player for sure and is very much an attacking threat with his creativity and dynamism.
“It was a wonderful season for Fulham last year and Fabio was a worthy winner of the individual recognition he got as a result of that.”
Klopp added that while Carvalho “will of course need patience”, the attacker is now in the “perfect environment” to progress.
New Liverpool star in the making
Klopp has shown throughout his Liverpool tenure that he can get the best out of young talent.
Carvalho is unlikely to be an outlier in that regard, amid the sort of players he will be working with in midfield and attack.
He could lean on two-time Champions League winner Thiago Alcantara to add flair to his game. Meanwhile, captain Jordan Henderson’s leadership will no doubt rub off on Carvalho.
Up front, Sadio Mane may have left but Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez can fine-tune the teenager’s finishing.
Having scored 11 goals and assisted eight others for Fulham next season, the Premier League will be a step up for Carvalho.
However, it is no doubt one that the attacker will take to given the support he will have around him.
