Championship heavyweights Featherstone and Leigh believe Super League should expand to 14 teams after Saturday’s thrilling 1895 Cup final.

The Centurions beat rivals Rovers 30-16 in a superb 1895 Cup final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

It was bruising encounter between two of the Championship’s best teams, who are both vying for promotion to the top-flight.

When asked if he thinks Super League should go to 14 teams, Featherstone coach Brian McDermott replied: “I think so.

“It makes sense to me that if you’ve got 14 candidates for players to aspire to play for, then it is better than 10 candidates.

“I think it is too simplistic an answer to say 10 teams makes everything better. It is not addressing anything of the issues which is the player pool which can’t really support Super League teams if that’s what we are talking about.

“I’d go 14 teams with no relegation.”

Adrian Lam: Both teams could go into Super League next year

Leigh coach Adrian Lam also shares the same opinion as McDermott. He thinks expanding the Super League competition is the way to go.

Lam said: “I think that anyway. I know they’ve got their ideas about that.

“I think both teams at the moment could probably go into Super League next year and grow that number there and progress with that moving forward but that is something for them to decide.

“We’ll just keep our heads down. At the moment it is the Million Pound Game that we’ve got to head towards. Even though that (1895 Cup win) was special, we’ve still got a massive job ahead of us which was probably the priority for the year.”

Featherstone and Leigh have played each other twice so far in 2022. Rovers came out on top in round two of the Championship, whilst the Centurions enjoyed success in the 1895 Cup. They meet again in the Championship at Leigh on Monday, June 13.
