FedExCup Playoffs: Who is on the bubble this week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship
The first of three FedExCup Playoffs events is in Memphis, where 125 golfers will try and compete for just 70 spots in next week’s BMW Championship.
Point totals have skyrocketed this week, too. The winner at the FedEx St. Jude Championship will receive 2,000 playoff points, compared to just 500 that winners get during the regular season.
That opens up the event to everyone on the list, even last man on the list, Rickie Fowler. If he were to win at TPC Southwind this week, for example, he would suddenly have more than 2,323 points — which would jump him into the field for the Tour Championship later this month.
More realistically, though, here’s a look at who is right on the bubble to qualify for the BMW Championship this week.
Just inside the cutoff
No. 66: Cam Davis
No. 67: John Huh
No. 68: Brendon Todd
No. 69: Lanto Griffin
No. 70: Trey Mullinax
Cam Davis is in the best position here, and he’s been playing great golf in recent weeks. He finished top 10 in back-to-back weeks at the John Deere Classic and the Barracuda Championship, and then finished T16 at the 3M Open and T14 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic to back that up. Assuming the Australian can make the weekend, and there aren’t any crazy jumps, he should be in good shape.

John Huh is in a similar position, considering he’s coming off a T2 finish at last week’s Wyndham Championship. That marked his best finish this season by far. There’s no doubt that the momentum is there.
Brendon Todd has made three straight cuts heading into Memphis, but he’s failed to finish inside the top 30 since the RBC Canadian Open in June. Lanto Griffin isn’t in the field this week, and he likely won’t be able to play until next year. Griffin underwent back surgery in July, and he’s expected to miss up to six months. His spot will be up for grabs.
That leaves Trey Mullinax, who has the first tee time on Thursday to kick off the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Mullinax picked up his first career win at the Barbasol Championship last month.
Though some in this group are sitting better than others, a full 72 holes is critical this weekend.
Outside looking in
No. 71: Brandon Wu
No. 72: Matthew NeSmith
No. 73: Gary Woodland
No. 74: Beau Hossler
No. 75: Chad Ramey
All five of these guys are in the field this week.
While Brandon Wu has just four top-10 finishes this season, two of them have come within the last month — including at last week’s Wyndham Championship.
Matthew NeSmith, who has yet to win on Tour, went T36 last week, which marked his second best finish since the Wells Fargo Championship in May.
Gary Woodland has struggled a bit since his 10th place finish at the U.S. Open. He’s missed two straight cuts, including one at the British Open, and he’s missed five of his last eight.
Beau Hossler rebounded at the Rocket Mortgage Classic after missing two straight cuts, but he still finished T69. Chad Ramey got his first PGA Tour win earlier this year at the Corales Puntacana Championship, but the 30-year-old has missed four of his last five cuts headed into Memphis.
