Rio Ferdinand reckons a number of Liverpool players are now “on the other side of the mountain” with Jurgen Klopp needing to move them on.

The Reds have struggled to maintain any consistent form in the Premier League this season with Klopp’s men only winning four of their first 12 matches.

Liverpool are ninth in the Premier League table, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal and eight points adrift of fourth-placed Newcastle United.

And Ferdinand reckons Klopp needs to take a leaf out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s book with the former Man Utd boss moving on players he thought were over the peak of their careers.

Ferdinand said: “He [Ferguson] was great at seeing the chink in them players armours whatever it be and changing and getting them out before they were on the other side of the mountain and going downhill.

“Whereas you look at we’re talking about certain players in this Liverpool team who are probably on the other side of the mountain now in terms of where they are in their careers.

“Jaap Stam was the best defender in the world at the time – ‘see you later’. David Beckham, in the form of his career – ‘bye bye!’. Ruud van Nistelrooy, top goalscorer at United, but the man just saw something early and it’s about making them big calls, the risk involved with that.

“You have to have the confidence in what you’re doing and you have to have the ability to spot talent elsewhere to bring in and cover that.”

Their poor form has not bled into the Champions League with Liverpool winning five of their six matches in the group stage, including a 2-0 victory over Napoli on Tuesday night.

On whether Liverpool were still contenders to win the Champions League despite their awful league form, Ferdinand (via the Daily Mail) replied: “100%. I totally agree with that”.

Fellow BT Sport pundit Peter Crouch added: “Definitely. When you get to that stage when you throw all your eggs in the CL basket, have great pedigree in the competition, players that have got the history behind them, they can definitely do it.”

Before Ferdinand continued: “And they’ve got Mo Salah, who just keeps scoring in this tournament.”

Liverpool have three matches left before the international break for the 2022 World Cup with a League Cup tie against League One side Derby County sandwiched in between Premier League fixtures against Tottenham and Southampton.
