Rio Ferdinand is concerned that Christian Eriksen will just be a “squad player” at Man Utd next season as he won’t oust Bruno Fernandes from the starting XI.

The Denmark international is closing in on a move to Old Trafford this summer after leaving Brentford on a free transfer at the end of June.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed today that Eriksen will be joining Man Utd on a three-year deal with the contracts “being checked by lawyers”.

Eriksen was in brilliant form for the Bees in the second half of last season after joining from Inter Milan, who he couldn’t represent due to Serie A regulations preventing the midfielder from playing with an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator).

Despite his impressive performances for Brentford last season, former Man Utd defender Ferdinand can’t see Eriksen being more than a “squad player”.

Ferdinand insists that Man Utd fans will be “anticipating” big-name signings this summer and Eriksen doesn’t fall into that category.

“I think Christian Eriksen is a squad player. He doesn’t come as a starter, I would be very surprised if he comes into Manchester United as a starter,” Ferdinand told his Vibe with Five YouTube channel.

“I think he’ll come in and play a particular role in and around it. The position he is likely to occupy will be similar to Bruno Fernandes and I don’t see him taking him out of the team.

“Can you play both? Yes, but then have you got the person defensively behind them  to be able to mop things up and secure things behind them,? I question that.

“So there is s lot of positives with him because I think he is a fantastic technician with fantastic ability but if he’s coming to be someone who fills in here and there, I can see that.

“But Man United fans are anticipating big names coming in the door.”
