Fernandinho to miss Manchester City’s next two games with hamstring injury after limping out of EFL Cup final

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Fernandinho will miss Manchester City’s next two games – against Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League – and that a scan on Monday will reveal how long he is out for.

The Brazilian defensive midfielder went off with a hamstring injury in the second half of his side’s 3-0 League Cup final win over Arsenal, leaving Guardiola to put Ilkay Gundogan in that position. While that was fine on the day and with City cruising, the Catalan admitted it is only a temporary solution, and that he know has to work out what to do with his team for the next two matches.

“He’s injured and will miss the next games,” Guardiola said. “We’ll see tomorrow [Monday], it’s a big loss for us. Now we have to find a solution to find who can play in the Fernandinho position.”

Conscious of such a possibility, Guardiola had wanted to bring in Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk, only for City to divert their interest to an attacking player once Leroy Sane got injured in the FA Cup. Sane is now fit, and City ultimately failed to bring in Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez.
