Ferrari are carrying out a three-day test at their test track at Fiorano, using an old F1 car, to kick off their 2023 track activity.

Ferrari’s now-traditional early-year test at Fiorano is being carried out this week, with the three-day test serving as a means for the drivers, mechanics, and engineers to blow off the cobwebs of the winter break.

Formula 1’s rules allow for private testing of cars of at least two years old, with the Scuderia opting to use their 2021 SF21 for the three days of testing.

Academy driver Robert Shwartzman kicked off the track action on Tuesday, as he will carry out the role of development and reserve driver in 2023 – sharing the role with Antonio Giovinazzi.

Shwartzman didn’t get in much track time in the morning due to the wet and cold track conditions, racking up 35 laps by the time Ferrari cried off for lunch.

He headed back out for a further 52 laps in the afternoon, having to sporadically use rain tyres due to the conditions. He completed 87 laps over the course of the day, a distance of 259 kilometres.

On Wednesday, race driver Carlos Sainz returned from his winter holidays to climb into the SF21 to carry out the day’s testing.

Ferrari are set to conclude the test on Thursday, with 2021 F1 championship runner-up Charles Leclerc getting his first chance to drive since the Abu Dhabi post-season test.

F1’s official pre-season testing gets underway on February 23rd at the Bahrain International Circuit, and runs through until February 25th.

Off-track, Ferrari have brought along three of their Academy students to Fiorano, with Maya Weug, Aurelia Nobels, and Arthur Leclerc on hand in the garage to pay close attention to how the F1 team operates.
