Chasing his sixth title of the season, Ferrer recovered after his Dutch opponent took a surprise lead in the match, to come through and secure his place in the last four of the tournament.

In the process, Ferrer secured his tour-leading 62nd match win of the year to set up a semi-final clash with seventh-seeded Frenchman Julien Benneteau.

Benneteau won his match in 58 minutes, taking it 6-2 6-2 to cruise past Colombia’s Alejandro Falla to reach his third semi-final of the season.

"I just tried to stay focussed on my game and what I needed to do," Benneteau said.

"Today I played very good technically. I wanted to be the one who was decisive on the court and it was a good match."

The Frenchman, who was runner-up to Jarkko Nieminen at the Apia International Sydney in January, claimed his 24th win of the season as he dropped just seven points on serve and broke Falla on four occasions.

Juan Monaco overcame Canada’s Vasek Pospisil 6-3 6-4 to assume his place in the semi-finals.

The Argentine will next take on Kei Nishikori, with the Japanese player progressing after Nikolay Davydenko retired, having lost the first set 6-4.
