FIFA fine England after players wear the wrong socks at the World Cup

England are out of the World Cup and the FA has one other bizarre reason to be upset after the disappointment in Russia.

The game’s governing body has been fined £50,000 after Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Raheem Sterling wore “unauthorised” socks during the tournament.

The trio all wore Devon-made brand Trusox over their official Nike socks despite ignoring a Fifa warning to stop.

Fifa explained the fine was officially due to the continued display of unauthorised branding on playing equipment.

It was handed down following the quarter-final win over Sweden and it is not yet known whether England players decided to stick with their kit for the defeat to Croatia.

It is the joint-second highest fine dished out at the World Cup behind Argentina’s £80,000 penalty after their fans hurled objects and chanted homophobic abuse.

England midfielder Dier is one of a number of sports stars listed as ambassadors on the Trusox website with Gareth Bale and Alexis Sanchez also wearers of the brand.

Swedish players were also hit with a fine over their socks while World Cup finalists Croatia were punished for drinking unauthorised beverages.
