FIFA president Infantino: 2018 World Cup will host video assistant referee

Fifa President Gianni Infantino has said that video refereeing is to be used at next year's World Cup in Russia.

This will be the first time in history that video assistant referee (VAR) technology will be utilised at a World Cup.

VAR can only review incidents relating to goals, red cards, mistaken identities and penalties.

"We will use video refereeing because we've had nothing but positive feedback so far," Infantino said.

Video assistance was introduced for the first time at the Fifa Club World Cup in Japan in December.

The system was also used to good effect in Spain's win over France last month in which it assisted the referee on two separate occasions.

The Football Association is poised to roll out trials for the technology this August. The governing body is considering introducing VAR for the first round of next season's EFL Cup.
