Legendary former Real Madrid star Luis Figo has backed the club to do all they can to ensure they secure an unprecedented third consecutive UEFA Champions League title.
Madrid conquered all before them in 2017, setting a new club record of five titles in a single calendar year as they won La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and became the first team in history to retain the Champions League.
And Figo believes his former team-mate, coach Zinedine Zidane, can lead Madrid to yet more continental glory in 2018 and that the club will reinforce in the January transfer window.
“Last year was Real Madrid’s best ever in terms of titles,” Figo, who led Madrid to the Champions League title in 2002, told Goal.
“Five titles in one year was amazing. Of course, in football you can’t win every time, but Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world,” added the 45-year-old, speaking courtesy of Hankook Tire, Global Partner of Real Madrid.
“They always try to get stronger and for sure they will try to do something in the transfer market in January to help them achieve their goals this year, which are to win the Champions League again and every other competition possible.”
Figo’s compatriot and former Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, the reigning World Player of the Year, will be key to Madrid’s hopes.
And Figo, who won well over 100 caps for his country, also hopes Ronaldo can lead his nation to glory this summer as they go in search of their first world title.
“Portugal have a good team, but we have a difficult draw with Spain, Iran and Morrocco,” he said.
“But we hope to achieve qualification for the next phase. Our goal is to make it to the final, but it’s a very tough competition.
“We have high hopes to do well, however, and to ensure we continue our good work after winning the European Championships last year.”
