Fikayo Tomori says he has point to prove to Chelsea – and Gareth Southgate

Fikayo Tomori has admitted he has got a point to prove when he returns to Chelsea for the first time with AC Milan after a frustrating spell with England.

Tomori did not play a single minute of England’s games against Italy and Germany, and the central defender was left out of the matchday squad entirely for the draw with Germany at Wembley.

The Football Association have not confirmed whether Gareth Southgate will be at Stamford Bridge for Wednesday night’s Champions League group game, but the England manager or a member of his backroom staff are expected to attend.

That gives Tomori, who spent six months on loan at Milan before moving to Italy permanently for £30 million last summer, the chance to not only impress his former employers, but also Southgate around two weeks before England’s squad for the World Cup is announced.

“Every footballer has a point to prove,” said Tomori. “Coming from Chelsea and being English, there is probably added motivation. I will maybe play differently. There is pressure every game. Pressure to win and pressure to perform for every single player.”

Asked if he was frustrated at not playing in England’s final two warm-up games, Tomori added: “Yeah, obviously every player wants to play and you want to be involved but it’s an honour for me to be selected. I know now that I’m not quite there, I’ve still got some stuff to do to get myself in the frame to be there for the World Cup, so hopefully I can do that.

“There are a lot of games between now and then for me to try and get in that squad or, hopefully, be in a position where I can get some minutes on the pitch as well.”

Southgate spoke individually with all of the players he left out of the Germany matchday squad and Tomori said: “There are things in Milan where the manager wants me to be in certain positions or do certain things that I need to try and remember to do on the pitch and work on off the pitch to make myself a better player and to try and be better in the structure of the team. Those things I spoke to Gareth about and he agreed, so I know I have to try and improve those things and, from there, we will see what happens.”

Tomori won the Serie A title with Milan last season and the trophy will be shown off in the ‘Milan to Many’ event at Boxpark Wembley on Tuesday night from 7pm with Alessandro Nesta and Daniele Massaro in attendance.
