Takumi Minamino has completed his move to Monaco, and the ex-Liverpool forward leaves with a bitter taste in his mouth if his recent comments are anything to go by.
The Japan international, 27, joined Liverpool for £7.25m in the winter window of 2020. Minamino was often made to settle for outings in the cups, though made his mark in the most recent campaign.
Indeed, Minamino was Liverpool’s top scorer in their successful League Cup campaign. He also notched three goals in the FA Cup – another competition the Reds would lift.
Yet starts in the league and Champions League were always hard to come by. As such, the Reds gave the greenlight to his exit and Monaco have beaten off competition from the likes of Leeds to secure his signature.
The news was confirmed on both Liverpool and Monaco’s official websites. Minamino’s new deal with the Ligue 1 side will run until 2026.
Speaking on the move, Minamino described joining Monaco as a “great joy.” However, his recent comments in the Japanese media suggest he’s leaving Anfield with a sense of unfulfilled potential.
“It is a great joy for me to join AS Monaco,” he said (via Monaco’s website).
“I am very happy to be part of this very exciting project, at a club with a great tradition and among the most recognized in Ligue 1.
“I’m looking forward to discovering my new environment and doing everything I can to help the team.”
Minamino motivated by “regret and anger”
Speaking to the Japanese press a fortnight ago, Minamino admitted his time at Anfield was an altogether frustrating one.
“Many of the games I played weren’t of interest to anyone,” he told Sanspo.
“Even if I left the results, there wasn’t much response. I was trying to inspire myself to prove my worth and I was doing personal training other than team training.
“I was thinking that I would leave something behind when I went to the match mentally.
“And I felt motivated by regret and anger every day. I’ve never had this much time as a player. It was difficult to maintain the condition and connect with my feelings.”
