Aston Villa have one hurdle to overcome despite announcing the signing of vastly experienced Sweden international, Ludwig Augustinsson.

The 28-year-old has over 250 league appearances to his name and is just four caps shy of bringing up the half century for Sweden. Primarily a left-back, Augustinsson was signed by Sevilla from Werder Bremen last summer, though is on the move just 12 months later.

Aston Villa have forged an agreement with Sevilla to sign the full-back on an initial season-long loan. The impending move was confirmed via Villa’s official website.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano added more detail to the coup, tweeting Villa have included an option to buy once the loan concludes.

If that option is taken up, the final reckoning will total a very modest £3.8m.

Romano added Augustinsson had already passed a medical on Monday morning. However, Villa’s statement did reveal there is one hurdle still to overcome.

Their article noted Augustinsson has now begun the process of securing a work permit. However, that is likely to be a mere formality and no complications are expected on that front.

Augustinsson brings Villa tally to six

Following Matt Targett’s permanent switch to Newcastle, a left-back to provide cover for Lucas Digne became a priority.

Augustinsson has filled that void and will bring with him a wealth of experience.

The Swede is a veteran of several European campaigns, including featuring in the Champions League at Sevilla last term.

His arrival also brings the tally of summer arrivals at Villa Park to six.

Much of Steven Gerrard’s business was conducted in the early days of the window. Deals for Philippe Coutinho, Diego Carlos and Robin Olsen were all announced on June 10 – the day the summer window opened.

Boubacar Kamara and Rory Wilson arrived in early July from Marseille and Rangers respectively. Augustinsson is the latest, though Villa fans will hold out hope he isn’t the last.
