'Avoid the area': Fire breaks out at Dorset nature reserve

A LARGE fire broke out in an area of heathland at a Dorset nature reserve.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is currently at Parley Common near Ferndown in response to the fire.

According to the service, eight appliances are at the scene having been alerted on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 7.

A fire service spokesperson said: “At 4.15pm this afternoon (07/06/2023) firefighters from Ferndown and Verwood were called to reports of a forest fire at Parley Common.

“On arrival they requested further support and at the height of this incident there were approximately 30 firefighters on scene.

“Crews extinguished the fire using beaters and hose reels.”

As of 7pm, the service said crews would remain on scene “for some time” dampening down hot spots.

An urge to avoid the area was also made.
