Fireworks as Bonfire lands York feature

Bonfire underlined his Derby credentials with victory in the Dante Stakes at York.

The 3/1 shot, under Jimmy Fortune, landed the feature race on the second day of the Dante Festival on the Knavesmire by three and a quarter lengths from 20/1 outsider Prince Of Johanne.

Favourite Ernest Hemingway set the pace in the Group Two renewal that has seen former Epsom winners Shahrastani, Reference Point, Motivator and Authorized win the 10 furlong contest.

Andrew Balding's charge took the lead inside the final quarter of a mile and coasted to victory.

Fortune said: "He travelled very well, he travelled like a good horse. He was probably in front long enough but he held on.

"We went a decent gallop, it was a truly run race. It was a good trial and it was as much as we wanted to do really.

"He's a playful little horse and he likes to do things his own way but he's very genuine."

Bookies cut the winner into 6/1 for the Investec Derby, the blue riband of the Flat campaign, on June 2.
