Chelsea have made Carney Chukwuemeka their fourth signing of a hectic summer transfer window.

Considered among the top young midfield prospects in European football, the 18-year-old has penned a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge as the highest-paid teenager in England and arrives from Premier League rivals Aston Villa for an initial fee of £15million, that could rise to £20m with add-ons.

There is plenty of excitement regarding a deal that came somewhat out of the blue earlier this week, with Chukwuemeka tipped for a big future in the game after starring for England’s Under-19s during their European Championship triumph in Slovakia earlier this summer.

His arrival is part of a renewed focus on youth by Chelsea, who have also signed the likes of ex-Arsenal midfielder Omari Hutchinson and Chicago Fire goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina over recent weeks and are plotting a move for Inter Milan starlet Cesare Casadei.

It remains to be seen if Thomas Tuchel views Chukwuemeka as a player who can make an impact straightaway or rather more of a talent for the future, but chairman and co-owner Todd Boehly seems to have hinted that he is a first-team signing to follow Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly who won’t embark upon a swift loan exit in order to gain more experience.

Villa will no doubt be sorry to lose Chukwuemeka, who joined their youth ranks from Northampton in 2016 and graduated through the academy, making 16 senior appearances including 14 in the Premier League, though he was frustrated after only being handed two starts last term.

The player had been linked with Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle and Leeds, while others expected him to potentially go abroad, with Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan among the interested parties from overseas.

Chukwuemeka was said to have no interest in signing an extension to a Villa contract that was due to expire next summer, with Steven Gerrard having omitted the teenager from the pre-season tour to Australia as a result.
