Marc Cucurella has trained with Chelsea for the first time ahead of a likely swift debut for his new club.

The versatile Spanish defender is the fifth arrival of a hectic summer transfer window at Stamford Bridge, signing a six-year contract earlier on Friday.

Cucurella certainly hasn’t come cheap, with Chelsea completing a deal with Brighton after protracted negotiations that could be worth up to £62.5million. The 24-year-old cost the Seagulls only £15m after signing from Getafe last summer, enjoying a superb debut campaign in the Premier League.

Cucurella will hope to have got quickly up to speed at Cobham ahead of the first weekend of the 2022-23 top-flight campaign, when he could already make his first appearance under Thomas Tuchel.

He was registered just before the 12pm BST Friday deadline that means he is eligible for duty at Goodison Park on Saturday evening when Chelsea begin the new season with a trip to face Frank Lampard’s Everton on Merseyside.

“I’m really happy,” Cucurella said after joining the Blues. “It’s a big opportunity for me to join one of the best clubs in the world and I’m going to work hard to be happy here and help the team.”
