The last people to see Fishmongers’ Hall terror attacker Usman Khan before he went on a killing spree are due to give evidence today.

The 28-year-old convicted terrorist stabbed to death two people - Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones – and wounded three others during a rampage through the historic London hall on November 29, 2019.

Khan was eventually restrained by members of the public who used a narwhal tusk and a decorative pike as makeshift weapons, before he was shot dead by armed police on London Bridge.

The inquest into the deaths of Mr Merritt and Ms Jones opened yesterday, with evidence of their final movements before being stabbed by Khan.

Mr Merritt, 25, was ambushed in the toilets where Khan had been making his final preparations for the attack, while Ms Jones, 23, was stabbed in the neck as she checked her coat into the hall’s cloakroom.

They had all been attending a event that day put on by Learning Together, a Cambridge University educational organisation which had been helping Khan following a 2012 terrorism conviction.

The inquest is due to hear today from other attendees at the event, who were sat on a table with Khan during speeches and saw his contributions to a workshop.

A filmmaker who was recording the event that day is also due to give evidence, having captured footage of Khan sat close to Ms Jones during the event.

The inquest heard yesterday that Mr Merritt, a course coordinator for Learning Together, had been in touch with Khan prior to the terror attack that claimed his life.

The two men came face-to-face in the toilets during a mid-afternoon break, when Khan stabbed Mr Merritt 12 times as he desperately tried to defend himself.

Soon afterwards, the extremist stabbed Ms Jones in the cloakroom area and attacked two other women before he was tackled by other people at the venue.

Khan had strapped to both hands kitchen knives, which had been crudely inscribed with a symbol for ‘Allah’, the inquest heard.

Khan eventually left the hall and headed towards London Bridge, where he was pinned down before he could attack members of the public at random.

Civil servant Darryn Frost was caught on camera rushing out of the hall while armed with the narwhal tusk, which he had taken from the wall to use to fend off Khan.

He and two others then managed to subdue the attacker on the bridge, before armed police arrived. The officers shot Khan dead when they spotted he was wearing a suicide vest, which later turned out to be a fake.

DCI Dan Brown told the hearing Khan is believed to have strapped on the vest on his train ride to London from Staffordshire, concealing it under his coat during the early stages of the event.

No one else is suspected of involvement in the attack.

The inquest, which is due to last nine weeks, continues.
