Huge investment. Fantastic when your club has it, but it soon sets off the green-eyed monster from within if it doesn’t.

Rumour has it that there are a couple of billionaires out there ready to spend some serious cash in the very near future.

Most people will tell you it’s difficult to make money out of football club, unless of course you run it Mike Ashley-style and avoid anything that resembles spending.

But those who are crazy rich doesn’t see the need to be tight when it comes to having fun with their little pet project.

At Manchester City and PSG – not forgetting the Chinese super powers- no cheque is too big to write to get what they want.

Happy to sign off on £600,000 a week players, the money men are seemingly in competition with each other to see who can spend the most.

But with flush newcomers to the game lurking around the corner ready to pick their moment, we assess the English clubs who could well be worth investing in.

Newcastle United

Mike Ashley is selling up, and the Toon Army rejoice. With a world class stadium and support to match, there’s scope to do something special with Newcastle if someone out there has deep enough pockets. A first trophy in forever would make any new owner an instant icon.

Nottingham Forest

Although having their best season in a while, there’s no chance of Forest winning back their Premier League place any time soon. Crying out for someone with some clash and clout, the two-time European Cup winners could take off again if things were right at boardroom level. Forest fans won’t hold their breath.

MK Dons

OK, this is a very left field one. Nobody’s favourite club ran roughshod over Wimbledon for a reason – and that’s because the area is huge and, despite the wrongs of their birth, they already have a smashing stadium. Music producer Pete Winkelman doesn’t seem keen on selling, despite the club being in a worst state than when they relocated in 2002.

Sheffield Wednesday

There’s no ground outside of the Premier League quite like Hillsborough when its full. With 40,000 success-starved Owls ready and waiting, there’s every chance of the famous old club doing something in the top flight with the right guidance.

Blackburn Rovers

The 1995 Premier League winners are at their lowest ebb. With the Venky’s rule one of the game’s biggest ownership failures, Rovers now find themselves playing the likes of Bury and Fleetwood Town in League One. The fans want new investment and the team certainly needs it.
