Five things… We know Robin van Persie did this summer

1) Got dumped
Robin van Persie’s love affair with his fellow Dutchman Louis van Gaal is well-documented, but it came to a crushing end at the start of the summer when LVG told RVP that Manchester wasn’t big enough for two guys with three-initialled nicknames. That was just a way of letting RVP down gently though, because the real reason was that LVG thought RVP wasn’t good enough for him anymore. And most upsettingly of all, LVG had the nerve to break up with RVP over a game of golf.

2) Found his soulmate
When they were at Old Trafford together, Van Persie and his Portuguese team-mate Nani never seemed to be on the same wavelength. It wasn’t personal - no one was on Nani’s wavelength. But when RVP left the glamour of the Premier League for the wilderness of the Turkish league, he found a familiar, comforting face awaiting him. It was Nani’s face. The pair made their Fenerbahce debuts at the same time and the winger even set up RVP’s first Süper Lig goal. Two men, brought together by failure, have formed an unlikely double act and a special bond. Beautiful.

3) Called Ed Woodward ‘classy’
Van Persie spent three seasons at Manchester United, scoring 58 goals and winning a league title, so it made sense that he wanted to pass on his thanks to key figures at the club when he left. But rather than singling out Sir Alex Ferguson or Wayne Rooney for praise, RVP instead lavished some outrageously kind words on a less celebrated colleague. “I highly appreciate the work of Ed Woodward,” said Van Persie after sealing his move to Turkey. “He was the man who was very classy in all this. A true gentleman. Ed, if you are listening or watching, thank you!” He could be assured that Ed was watching, and feeling better about himself than he would all summer.

4) Earned £50m
If you’re wondering why Van Persie seemed so delighted with his Turkish move, a clue may lie in the financial details. The transfer fee was a fairly modest £4.7m, but RVP’s signing-on fee was almost the same amount. Add to that a wage packet of £240,000 a week, plus a “golden goodbye” from United, and the total figure RVP will pocket by moving from Manchester to Istanbul works out at a staggering £47,444,000. Let’s hope he moved for the money rather than Champions League football - because Fenerbahce have already been knocked out.

5) Ruined next summer
Despite his relegation from the upper echelons of domestic football, Van Persie was still top of the international football tree at the start of the summer. Euro 2016 would be his final chance to shine on the biggest stage, with Holland only needing positive results against Iceland and Turkey to progress. But RVP was left on the bench against Iceland, then restored to the side for a 3-0 defeat in Konya, leaving the Dutch on the brink of elimination. It appears that next summer may not be nearly as eventful as this one was for RVP.
