Floyd Mayweather prospect Danny Gonzalez shot dead aged 22 on Labor Day

Danny Gonzalez, the boxing prodigy signed to Floyd Mayweather’s promotional company, has been shot day in a Labor Day tragedy.

Th 22-year-old, who had a 3-0 record as a professional, was spending the holiday in Moreno Valley, California with two other men when somebody approached the group and opened fire.

Mayweather paid tribute to the fighter, who had an outstanding 96-13 record as an amateur, writing: “R.I.P champ, gone but never forgotten".

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department confirmed that they responded to “a report of an assault with a deadly weapon” on Monday shortly after 9pm.

A police report read: "Deputies arrived within minutes and located three male victims with gunshot wounds.

"One adult male succumbed to his injuries at the scene, and two minors were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries."

The boxing world has mourned the loss of Gonzalez, with WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman sending his condolences to the family and friends of the “top prospect”.

Sulaiman said: "We are very sad to report the tragic death of boxer and top prospect, Danny Gonzalez.
