Football: Rafa Benitez 'agrees three-year deal to stay as Newcastle manager'

Rafa Benitez and Newcastle have struck a deal to see him remain as manager, according to Sky Sports.

A three-year deal is expected to be announced later today which will contain assurances for the Spaniard on full control of player recruitment and budgets set for the summer and winter transfer windows.

Benitez was appointed as Steve McClaren's successor in March but was unable to prevent the Magpies from relegation to the Championship.

Benitez has been given complete control over recruitment and been promised a large transfer kitty in order to rebuild the side this summer.

Chief Scout Graham Carr will be leaving the club in the next few weeks as Benitez wants to put his own scouting network in place.

Ashley has also told managing director Lee Charnley to ensure Benitez is allowed to reinvest the money received from player sales.

Benitez, 56, won La Liga twice with Valencia, the Champions League and FA Cup with Liverpool, the Europa League with Chelsea and the Italian Cup with Napoli but his spell in charge of hometown club Real Madrid ended after just eight months in January 2016.
