FOOTBALL: Real Madrid spending world's highest £21m per player to win nothing

The average cost of a Real Madrid player is a stunning £21.62m.

The La Liga giants won nothing last season but their starting 11 is the most expensive in the world, just ahead of the Premier League's Manchester City (£19.93m) and Manchester United (£19.29m), both of whom also won nothing last season.

Ligue 1 champions Paris St-Germain complete the top four with an average player price of £19.08m.

The figures have been provided by the Swiss-based CIES Football Observatory who have compiled the club-by-club totals for Europe's top five divisions.

On average, Bayern Munich (£10.8m) and Juventus (£10.14m) spent only half per player en route to winning the Bundesliga and Serie A respectively.

Chelsea (£15.9m) and Barcelona (£15m) complete the other huge spenders.

High-flying Leicester City have spent just £1.76m per player.
