Football - Boro progress pleases Westley

Stevenage boss Graham Westley felt his team were worthy winners at Peterborough as they continued their recent improvement.

A classy 20th-minute strike from Lucas Akins - his first league goal of the season - settled the contest at London Road 1-0 in favour of Boro. The winger collected a Michael Doughty pass and guided a stunning 20-yard curler past home goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik.

Stevenage had midfielder Jimmy Smith sent off for collecting a second booking in the 64th minute but they still held on comfortably as the out-of-form hosts departed the field to a chorus of jeers.

Westley said: "We brought a game plan to the stadium and executed it well. We deserved victory over 90 minutes.

"We've been struggling to produce winning football at the club. We had lost 14 of 17 before I returned earlier this year.

"There has been a slow turnaround since and we have now won seven of our last 10 matches, which is very pleasing progress.

"If I was the referee I would probably not have sent Jimmy off. That challenge was probably worthy of a yellow card."
