Pompey are reeling from three defeats in eight days which have seen them crash out of the FA Cup, the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and slip to 16th in League Two.

But John Marquis has returned to Millwall following the end of his loan spell, and with fellow strikers Ryan Bird and Patrick Agyemang sustaining injuires during Saturday's 4-0 defeat at AFC Wimbledon, Whittingham could do with some reinforcements.

Fratton Park chief executive Mark Catlin told Press Association Sport: "John has gone back to Millwall and Guy is working to a budget which has a little bit of scope.

"The board are here to help and support Guy where we can."

Despite their lowly position Pompey are only six points off the play-off places and have a game in hand.

Whittingham has come under fire from some fans following their recent poor run but Catlin says there will be no pressing the panic button.

"It's a weird league, very topsy-turvy," he added. "At the weekend Northampton, who are bottom, beat Fleetwood at the top. We have seen plenty of teams string four wins together or suffer four straight defeats, and six of our next eight games are at home.

"I think the division is going to be very tight right until the end."
