Football - Chairboys leave Ainsworth happy

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth admitted he could not have asked for more from his players after they edged past Morecambe 1-0 on the opening day of the season.

New-signing Paris Cowan-Hall, who joined in the close season after leaving Plymouth on a free transfer, struck the only goal of the game seven minutes into his debut at Adams Park.

Dean Morgan, who crossed for Cowan-Hall's goal, could have scored twice himself, while Jack Sampson was equally as wasteful in front of goal for Morecambe after the break.

And, while disappointed that they only put one past the Shrimps, Ainsworth insists the win was the ideal way for Wycombe to start the new Sky Bet League Two campaign.

"I thought we finished the game strongly. It is probably a disappointment that it was 1-0, but I don't think anyone would begrudge us a 3-0 or a 4-0 win," said Ainsworth.

"One-nil is nice because it doesn't raise expectation levels of anyone else coming here and people aren't saying we are going to win the league now because we have won 4-0. It is not like that.

"A 1-0 is a steady performance, a real professional performance and I'm very pleased with the way we played. I'm really happy with the result, but happier with the performance.

"I said at half-time if we draw the game it doesn't matter because we have seen in the first half there is enough to take forward.

"I was really pleased. We might have to work a little bit on finishing, but I think we more than matched them at creating chances in the game."
