Albion enjoyed an impressive first half of the season as Clarke guided them towards the European qualification places.
However, an horrendous run of form in the New Year and the headaches brought on by the January transfer window and striker Peter Odemwingie's various misdemeanours showed the Scot the other side of management.
"'Enjoy' is not a word I use very often but it's been a great challenge," he said.
"In the first half of the season I thought it was the easiest job in the world. I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about.
"In the second half of the season I had a rude awakening with different problems and different things to consider.
"I think next year I will be a better head coach.
"You have to learn how to react to events. Hopefully I've learned a lot this year and I'll try to learn even more next year."
