Andy Monkhouse won it for the home side with a 79th-minute header from Matty Dolan's corner, in a game that was in the balance for a long time.
But they were pegged back by the Daggers, with home goalkeeper Scott Flinders making a number of fine saves, while the visitors levelled with a superb individual strike from the lively Zavon Hines, who caused problems out wide all day.
"It was a great goal from Zavon. He actually didn't play well in the first half. He wanted more of the ball and I told him I understood that and I wanted him to show his fantastic ability," Burnett revealed.
"Fair play to Hartlepool, they have held out and got a goal on the back of it. Sometimes it's not all about what we do, it's what the opposition do and they defended resiliently at times. I've no complaints. Our performance was okay, their goalkeeper has made some very, very good saves.
"On another day you get goals and a reward and we didn't here. I've said to the players that they have to accept losing, it's how you bounce back from it.
"I've no complaints, we worked hard and gave all we have got. But we are doing okay overall."
