Football - Cook rues late leveller

Manager Paul Cook was left deflated after a late setback against Scunthorpe denied his Chesterfield side a first victory in seven games.

Iron defender Luke Waterfall gave away an eighth minute goal on his first league start, allowing Marc Richards to fire past Sam Slocombe from the edge of the box, but he made amends in the 88th minute when he headed a free-kick past Tommy Lee.

"We are very disappointed, the lads are suffering at the minute because of the results and late goals," he said. "We work very hard in games but sometimes we are just a bit misguided in our decision-making on the ball and that's something you expect to be better with.

"You have to put teams away and when the wind and rain was against us in the second half we refused to do the ugly things in football, like turning them around and squeezing up the pitch and playing in their half, and that's something we all take responsibility for together.

"We had great support again and this season it's been nothing short of amazing, but it's a long journey and the fans know me by now, we don't look for excuses or sympathy and we know we must start winning games to get this club where we want to be - which is promotion."
