The Toffees have enjoyed a good start to the Spaniard's first season in charge with the club in seventh, two points behind fourth-placed Southampton.
But despite growing optimism at Goodison Park Martinez said an assessment of their realistic target could not be made for some time and talk of the top four was premature.
"We are still very early in the season, it would be foolish for us to be saying that now," he told the Liverpool Echo.
"We need to use the first two-thirds of the season to see how many points we can get.
"Then we'd go into the last third fighting for it.
"I'm very pleased with the squad, we have a great mixture of young talent and experience and it excites me - but it's too early to say what we'll be fighting for."
