England had their chances but two late goals, scored by Trezeguet and Ahmed Hassan, sealed their fate.

Harry Kane spurned a glorious chance, while Eric Dier hit the bar with a free kick, but as they pushed for a winner late on they were exposed on the break.

With two draws and a defeat, the team finished bottom of their qualifying group, going home along with Egypt, whose two losses in their first two games had already put them out.

In the other game in the group, Iraq beat Chile 2-1 to ensure they qualified top of Group E

England have now gone 16 matches without a win at this level.

Earlier in the day Group F was concluded with Croatia claiming top spot after a 2-1 win over New Zealand.

Uruguay joined them in the next round with a resounding 4-0 victory over Uzbekistan.
