The 33-year-old has already made more appearances this season than he did at Watford during the entire 2012/13 campaign.
A summer move to Pride Park has seen the former Stoke man play 11 times so far this term and he is hoping to become an integral part of the side under new manager Steve McClaren.
"I'm playing football again after missing a lot of last season due to injury so I'm really enjoying life at the moment," he told Derby's official website.
"Hopefully with a few more games in the coming weeks I'll get even better.
"I know if I have a run of games I can be a positive influence on the team and I've been fortunate that a few injuries have given me an opportunity.
"It's a pleasure to play with these young lads, especially when they go forwards like they can do. It's an exciting team to play in.
"With the new boss coming in hopefully we will learn plenty more and improve because he is very good at what he does."
