Football - Evans reflects on eventful opener

Steve Evans went through a wide range of emotions after watching his Rotherham side open their League One campaign with a dramatic 3-3 draw at Crewe.

Lee Frecklington could have had a hat-trick as, with the Millers one-nil down after Anthony Grant's early opener, he shot wide in the sixth minute when it would have been easier to score.

Max Clayton added a second for the hosts before Frecklington then quickly pulled one back - all within the opening 10 minutes.

Harry Davis stuck from the penalty spot to extend Crewe's lead but, as panic set in across the Alex backline, two goals in the final five minutes from Ben Pringle and Frecklington completed the comeback.

And Evans saluted Frecklington for bouncing back in impressive fashion. He said: "Lee knows he should have got a leveller for us early on but he is like all top strikers in that he is never afraid to miss and was straight back in there with two goals.

"I was pleased that even though he missed that chance early on he wasn't afraid to bend one in with the outside of his foot in the 91st minute.

"It was the good, bad and ugly from us. Our defending wasn't great at times, but we've come away from home and dominated for large spells.

"We may have got a last-minute equaliser but if we had come away with nothing it would have been a travesty.

"Our start was down to bad defending but all bar that we were unfortunate to be behind and we showed our passion to come back."
