The 37-year-old goalkeeper has moved to the Riverside in a month-long deal and is expected to go straight into Aitor Karanka's starting XI in place of suspended Jason Steele, who saw red at Elland Road last Saturday.
The former Newcastle man will also join a very small group of players who have appeared for all three of the north east's major clubs having also played for Sunderland while on loan from Blackburn.
"I'm delighted, it was a bit rushed getting in for the 5 o'clock deadline, but I'm delighted to be here and I can't wait for Saturday," Given told Sky Sports News.
"That's what you want to do, you want to play football and I'm really looking forward to the game.
"I spent a long time here, obviously at Sunderland, a long time with Newcastle, so it's nice to be at Middlesbrough now, so it's fantastic.
"When this opportunity came along it was too good to turn down and thanks to Aston Villa as well for letting me go, I'm just delighted to be here."
