Football - Goals target for George

Middlesbrough defender George Friend is being urged to go for goals after opening his account at Wigan.

Friend struck to level the scores at 1-1 before Boro were ultimately denied victory by a late equaliser, and manager Tony Mowbray is hoping to see more of the same from a player who showed plenty of enterprise during his early months with the club.

Mowbray told the Teessiders' official website: "We have been trying to get George playing higher and back to how he did early last season.

"The signs are good and we're pleased with him. He's still got a bit to go, but we all saw in his first six months what a threat he can be and we've got to make sure he continues in that vein."

Grant Leadbitter fired the visitors into a 2-1 lead at the DW Stadium, but a late deflected free-kick by Jordi Gomez ensured the game ended all square.
