Less than four years ago the Canaries and Saints were both in the third tier and played one another in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Norwich edged past Southampton 1-0 on Saturday as they faced up in the Premier League - somewhere their combined £65million summer spending shows they plan to stay.

City have been the more active of the sides but Hughton is open to bringing in even more before the September 2 deadline.

"What we have is a very structured recruitment policy at the club that I would like to think has served us quite well in this pre-season," he said.

"And through that if it is right to bring someone, then we will, but if we don't then I am very happy with the squad that we have got."

Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Johan Elmander and Gary Hooper have all arrived at Norwich this summer, as has teenager Nathan Redmond.

The winger capped a fine performance with the winner against Southampton, but it was another new recruit, Leroy Fer, that was named man of the match.

"I thought he had a really good all-round game," Hughton said of the former FC Twente midfielder.

"He competed very much because against a good Southampton team that you have to be solid in the middle of the park against due to the way they play and pass the ball.

"He also showed some real good quality on the ball as well.

"Leroy came back a little bit later than some of the others because he had been involved with the Netherlands Under-21s and we are learning more about him with each training session and each week passes. I thought he was very good."
